Divine and Natural Revelation…
Man’s Metaxic Semiotic Participation in Reality
“All nature abounds in proofs of other influences than merely mechanical action, even in the physical world”…
— Charles Sanders Peirce
“There is indeed an essential opposition between the spirit of Greek science, orientated towards contemplation, and the secular spirit of modern science, directed at dominating the world through technology, and this informed by the spirit of domination and power”…
— Augusto del Noce
“The great discovery of Greek philosophy and the foundation of its lasting truth is that of evidence, understood not as a force that constrains but as light that illuminates”…
— Augusto del Noce
Man’s Metaxic Semiotic Participation in Reality (Potentiality to Actuality) — Towards a unified higher-order understanding of Reality beyond Materialism and Nietzschean Perspectivism — combining Physics and Metaphysics mediated by Signs
The following discussion is a preliminary ongoing synthesis of the ideas of:
- Aristotles’ concepts of matter & form (essence — primary substance) and substance (matter informed by form — hylomorphism);
- Aristotle’s distinction between potentiality (matter) and actuality (form);
- Scotus’s concepts of haecceity & essence, Intrinsic Being (potentiality for actualisation) and Finite Being;
- Plato, Christian Theologians & Philosophers including St Augustine, St Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus and Eric Voegelin’s ideas as they relate to the concept of Metaxy; and
- Philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotic Triadic and Pragmatic Maxim.
A synthesis that transcends the prevailing secular progressive (Marxist) liberal orthodoxy’s understanding of Reality and the endemic embracement of Dialectical Materialism (Idealism & Materialism) anchored in Nominalism, Nietzschean Perspectivism, Modern Gnosticism and a Theology of Marxism.
A set of Modern and Post-Modern Ideas that have been extensively critiqued by leading intellectuals such as Peirce (Nominalism), Del Noce, Scruton & Solzhenitsyn (Marxism), Voegelin (Modern Gnosticism), Rand (Modern Perspectivism) and Chomsky (Post-Modern Perspectivism).
Ideas that inevitably lead to a New Totalitarianism (Arendt, Del Noce, Voegelin and Scruton).
A synthesis that elevates our understanding of the Nature of Reality beyond Materialism — Physics, Physical Forces & Matter.
A synthesis that elevates our understanding of Reality beyond Idealism, Human Consciousness, Nietzschean Perspectivism and the Primacy of Man.
A synthesis grounded in Being, the Univocity of Being, and Metaphysics (Study of Being in its most actualised state — Science of Reality ).
One that also recognises a Voegelin Metaxy tension of existence — the distinction but also the relationship between the Contingent Being of Man (Created) and the Necessary Being of God (Creator).
A synthesis that renews and continues the Medieval Scholastics integration of Christian Theology and Ancient Greek Philosophy.
A synthesis that anchors the Triadic nature of Reason and the Gift of Reason — A form of reasoning that combines both faith (e.g. Christian Morals — refer to Kant’s critique of Pure Reason) & reason and embraces Voegelin’s ideas that identify the central role that Christianity performs in maintaining order in human existence.
A synthesis anchored in Rosmini’s Triadic of Being — Ideal Being, Real Being and Moral Being.
A synthesis that brings together immanence and transcendence into a Thomistic structure of reality that reflects the relationship between Conscious Man with the Natural World and God.
A Metaxic Semiotic interpretation of Reality — a process of transformation that reflects Man’s participation in Reality — anchored in the Univocity of Being and Universality of Reason that brings a Sense of Coherence — an Ordered Being.
- Physics (Study of the realm of potentiality — change and realisation of forms within matter — the potential of matter to take on different forms — What exists in itself — Aristotle’s Substance (Primary & Secondary) — Matter); and
- Metaphysics ( Study of the realm of actuality — the ultimate unchanging and actualised reality — the actuality in its highest and most complete form — What it is — Aristotle’s Essence — Form ) mediated by;
- Symbolic Signs (Study of the realm of meaning (Semiotics) -the underlying intelligibility of Reality) Ideas that reflect Man’s participation (Meaning, Discovery, Agency, and Invention) in Reality. Meaning emerges through Man’s participation in Reality (Pragmatic Maxim & Semiotic Triadic) and the mediation of understanding is via semiotic signs.
Thought interacts with Reality but does not create it (i.e. in contrast with nominalist, constructivist and Nietzschean perspectivism).
Thought (mediated via Semiotic Signs) enables the transformation of the realm of potentiality (Physics — matters capacity to take form) into the realm of actuality (Metaphysics — ultimate actualised Reality).
One that also recognises the metaphysical uniqueness, essence and haecceity (refer John Duns Scotus) of the individual. The potential for actualisation of the Intrinsic Being.
A way of deepening our understanding of the notion of Divine and Natural Revelation of God’s existence and eternal power.
Humanity’s Logos — the intelligibility of the Universe and the potentiality of the comprehension of a Divine Reality and Order of Being created by God.
